Historically and culturally, Pune has experienced the Rashtrakuta, Satavahana and Yadav dynasties. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Rajmata Jijau Maa Saheb laid the foundation for the establishment of the city. The Peshwas also played a significant role in the development of Pune. After the fall of the Peshwa empire in 1818, the British took control of Pune and its surrounding areas. After the establishment of the Municipal Council in 1858, civic infrastructure was established in the city.
The Pune Municipal Corporation was established in 1950 in the city of Pune, which is known for its historical and cultural heritage. In the following years, especially after the Panshet flood of 1962, the Municipal Corporation carried out the work of rebuilding the clock that was destroyed in a very neat and beautiful manner. In the next few years, in order to develop the city rapidly and provide essential services like water, roads, electricity, primary health and education to the citizens, the city was developed while preserving the historical heritage of the Municipal Corporation. The Heritage Management Department was established to develop tourism in the city. This department has undertaken and completed some important projects. A list of historical places in the city has also been prepared.
